Chancery Court is a Court of record that
conducts Civil Court. Chancery Court does not handle any criminal matters.
Chancery Court is in charge of Adoptions, Probate Court, and delinquent
property taxes. All records are public except for Adoptions and anything
put under seal by the Court.
Chancery court Judges are elected to an
eight-year term by the district, which they are assigned. McNairy County
Chancery Court is in the 25th judicial district, which also includes
Hardeman, Fayette, Tipton, and Lauderdale Counties. Chancery Court Judges
for the 25th judicial district are Martha Brasfield and William C. Cole.
There are several requirements that must be met in order to be a Judge in
Chancery Court.
The Clerk and Master and deputies act as
administrative aid to the Chancery Court Judges, provide assistance in the
courtroom, handle courtroom administration, are responsible for record
management, docket maintenance, revenue maintenance, maintenance of the
Court minutes, official communication, and various other court associated
duties.
The Clerk and Master in McNairy County is Kim
Harrison. The Clerk and Master is appointed by the Chancellor for a
six-year term and must live in the county they serve. The deputies in
Chancery Court are Amy Goodman and Esther Riley. The Clerk and Master is
required to hold an office in the county seat, which is Selmer, Tennessee.
